Mastering is so much more than volume, although to an untrained ear it certainly can feel like it.

 

Volume (or loudness) is just the final stage of mastering.

Mastering is the process of making small changes to the dynamics, tone, colour, stereo field, etc. that when put together create a big impact in the overall quality and perception of the mix.

 

Mastering is the (not so) secret sauce that elevates a great mix to an award winning one.
