Why is EQ used in mastering?

EQ is used in mastering to help shape the tone of the mix as a whole.

“But I used EQ in mix already”. When we use EQ in mastering there is a different approach used to that of mixing. Changes in the mastering process are usually wider and shallower, allowing a full manipulation of the track’s tone.

Here at Release Mastering we operate a hybrid studio that allows us to make changes to the character of the sound using the rich warmth of wide analog EQs, whilst also relying on digital EQ plugins to perform the more in-depth mix fixes such as harsh resonant frequencies and rebalancing thin frequency ranges.

EQ is used in mastering in part to enhance positive existing frequencies present in a mix, and balance out frequencies regions that lack tonal content.
